Remediation
SITE REMEDIATION DOESN'T HAVE TO BE EXPENSIVE!
"Remediation" is a word in the environmental lingo that you won'tfindin the dictionary - at least we didn't. It's kin to "remedy" in that both derive from the (Latin) "remedium," a combination of "re-" (back, again) and "mederi" (to heal). Thus we have, "to heal back," which means: restoration to a previous sound state.
In the environmental field, "remediation" means restoration of soil or groundwater to their former wholesome state. "Remediate" is the verb form.
The extent of the remediation effort depends on site constraints, the nature of contaminants and the conceived imminent threat to public health and the environment.
Remedial measures can range from simply leaving the contaminants to attenuate naturally (e.g., benzene in soil will decompose in a matter of months to few years), a zero cost option, through the enhancement of in-situ natural degradation process with the injection of enhancing agents, a medium cost option, to applying sophisticated extraction tools to pull the contamination to the surface and recycle or destroy it there, the cost of which ranges from hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars.
